IOTA staking:
how it works and how to stake IOTA
IOTA has run on delegated proof of stake since the IOTA Rebased upgrade went live on mainnet on 5 May 2025. Validators process transactions and run consensus. Token holders delegate IOTA to them, which gives a validator voting power and gives the holder a share of each epoch's rewards.
Matrixed.Link runs an IOTA validator. Delegating to it, or to any other validator, helps decentralize and secure the network.
Why stake IOTA
with Matrixed.Link.
Validator selection on IOTA is not about chasing the highest displayed APR. It is about who is actually operating the infrastructure when something goes wrong at 3am UTC.
- 01 Active IOTA validator since May 2025 (epoch 2, two days after the mainnet launch), verifiable on the IOTA explorer
- 02 Named by the IOTA Foundation in its December 2024 round of IOTA Rebased testnet validators, ahead of the mainnet launch
- 03 The same ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified operations as our Ethereum, Polygon, Enjin and Chainlink nodes
- 04 Move-based network operations: protocol upgrades and epoch changes handled in-house
- 05 AAA-rated provider on StakingRewards (the rating covers Matrixed.Link as a whole, not one network)
How IOTA staking works.
Pick a validator
In the IOTA Wallet, go to the Home tab, click Start Staking and choose a validator from the list. Compare commission and track record, not just the displayed reward estimate.
Stake from your own wallet
Enter an amount, leaving some IOTA for transaction fees, and confirm. Staking wraps your IOTA in a stake object in your own wallet that records the validator's staking pool and the epoch your stake starts. Your IOTA stays self-custodial.
Earn each epoch, unstake any time
Your stake counts from the next epoch and rewards are added at the end of each epoch. There is no lock-up period: you can unstake whenever you like. Rewards stop for the epoch in which you unstake.
IOTA staking at a glance.
- Consensus
- Delegated proof of stake (IOTA Rebased, on mainnet since 5 May 2025)
- Epoch length
- 24 hours
- Stake becomes active
- From the next epoch
- Rewards
- Paid at the end of each epoch from newly minted IOTA (767,000 IOTA per epoch, per IOTA's docs), shared across staking pools by voting power and performance
- Compounding
- Automatic: rewards raise your staking pool's exchange rate, so they compound without re-staking
- Lock-up
- None. You can unstake at any time; your IOTA and earned rewards are returned at the end of that epoch, which earns no rewards
- Validator commission
- Set by each validator as a % of its stakers' rewards, up to 20%; can change without prior notice
- Underperformance
- Validators score each other every epoch. One that underperforms gets a reduced share of that epoch's rewards, possibly none, and so do its stakers
- Validator set
- A candidate needs 2M IOTA of stake to join. Below 1.5M it gets a 7-epoch grace period; below 1M it is removed
Parameters as documented by IOTA and can change with protocol upgrades. Live rates and validator details are shown in the IOTA Wallet and on the IOTA explorer.
